It is always interesting to observe how a character from a book comes to life on the silver screen. One of my all-time favorite detectives Hercule Poirot is a complex character with his own peculiar habits. A man most brilliant but also multi-dimensional. I am more than impressed than David Suchet’s interpretation of Poirot. He brings Poirot to life.
David’s Poirot is just what Agatha Christie would have imagined – the short bald Belgian, with accented English, impeccable tastes and droll humor. Earnest and perceptive, he forms an endearing persona. Traits that come out remarkably well and that were just hidden in various layers in the books are Poirot’s obsessive compulsive disorder related to symmetry and hygiene.
I was surprised to see perhaps a little dandyish representation of Poirot’s personality. But I guess its more about how the English would see an immaculately dressed, gallant foreign man – a little effeminate perhaps.
My sister had shared a bunch of episodes with me and that’s how I got introduced to this ITV series. Each episode is 1 to 2 hours long and is based on a novel by Agatha Christie.
Quite faithful to the books, episodes start by setting up a location for the crime and introducing various characters. Narratives vary from episode to episode but one thing remains the same – the closing, the grand finale – when Poirot gathers everyone involved with the case and unravels the mystery.
The other two recurring characters are Hugh Fraser as Captain Hastings and Philip Jackman as Inspector Japp. Again brilliant casting thought I had imagined neither to be as dense as portrayed.
The most fun part is solving the case as you go along. Kapil & I keep guessing till the end who could the murderer be. Sometimes we are right and sometimes we are close.
Verdict
Makes for entertaining evenings in front of the TV. A must watch if you are a fan of the detective character.

Yes. It’s quite weird for some that I got introduced to Agatha Christie through this TV Series and not the books. I had not read any of her book before I saw the series.
Many a times, the adaptations of books are not great. But am sure that this series does justice to Christie’s books.
I used to watch these series a while back when it was featured on TV. 🙂 Found it very interesting!
