It’s almost outrageous that I should consider reviewing the literary work of someone as globally renowned and acknowledged as Rabindranath Tagore. But our goal is to write about things we feel are worth sharing, so here goes an attempt to explain my first experience with Tagore.
Mystic Moods is a compilation of 10 short stories, more or less centered on the inherent darkness in the minds and hearts of all humans. The stories reflect some social evils of the Indian pre-independence era such as child marriage and the reduced status of women. Here are the highlights of this collection.
‘The Living and the Dead’ is a dark comedy about a woman assumed to be dead by others, believed to be dead by herself but actually alive. Entertaining and ironic, it reflects the human fear of death.
‘Craving Stones’ is an out-an-out bone chiller with all the essential ingredients. An abandoned mansion, a lone bachelor, an ancient cook and wailings in the night. Vivid descriptions will make your hair stand!
In ‘Metamorphosis’, possibly the only story with a happy ending, we trace the story of a rebellious village girl. She is married to an educated young man who is taken in by her by independence and fierce nature. She does not fit in the traditional role of a wife, and her husband gives her several chances to be happy. No amount of cajoling or coaxing can turn her into a lady, it is something that she discovers for herself.
All of them are good in terms of story line, and the language is impeccable, though certain beauty gets lost in translation from Bengali to English.

I felt the book was kindof chilling because of the darker themes portrayed here. I’m presently reading Tagore’s selected works but most of the poetry seems to go over…so I’m sticking to prose.
Yes . I agree. I never expected Tagore to write stuff about paranormal. I still have not gone on to reading more Tagore but that is in the pipeline
I’m going to see if my library has a copy of this as it sounds like it might be an interesting read and teach me a little more about India. Are there other authors you would recommend?
The picture you have for your header is wonderful!
Hi Cath,
Thanks for your comments. The picture is from a wordpress template but thanks anyway. The theme is ocean mist. Sounds nice and dreamy, doesnt it?
Tagore is obviously brilliant. I would also recommend VS Naipaul and Salman Rushdie. I have enjoyed reading their books. And ofcourse you must try ‘The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri.
