We get so busy attempting to live a life that we often end up ignoring the simple moments that make our lives interesting. Majid Majidi’s Children of Heaven is about those simple moments. It is a story that revolves around a ‘pair of shoes’ and takes the viewer on a trip to life in Iran.
It’s a story about a brother and sister and starts when the brother (Ali) loses the shoes of his sister (Zahra). They both decide to keep this loss a secret among themselves as they are afraid that their parents would be angry if they found out. As there is no money to buy a new pair of shoes, Ali and Zahra come up with a plan.
They share the shoes of Ali as their school timings are different. From here the story takes many twists and turns and is almost cute in the way these children face the operational problems of sharing a single pair of shoes. In the end, Ali takes part in a race with intentions of coming third to win a pair of shoes for his sister.
Majid Majidi weaves magic by his excellent direction of this simple story. The film is shot in Teheran. Many scenes on the streets are actually shot with hidden cameras to capture the real life. The film is about a family and also gives a glimpse into their struggle of father to make ends meet and give a good life to his children. Though it doesn’t portray the family as dying of hunger yet it highlights the lives of a lower middle class family.
