This Australian period drama boasting exceptional production quality, stellar performances, and a predominantly engrossing script, it effortlessly transports viewers to a bygone era.
Set in 1929, a decade following the culmination of the Great War, Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries strikes a delicate balance between lightheartedness and humor. While the war’s lingering shadow subtly permeates the darker aspects of the narrative, no character traversing this world remains untouched by its impact. Moreover, the series frequently delves into topics such as feminism, gay rights, and religion, showcasing a clear inclination towards progressive ideals. Almost every episode successfully passes the Bechdel test, adding depth and substance to the storytelling. Although the mysteries themselves can be hit-or-miss, Season 2 exhibits stronger and more compelling plot lines.
Our audacious protagonist, The Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher, assumes the role of a lady detective with unwavering determination. Supported by an impressive ensemble of domestic aides and companions, she embarks on solving mysteries with aplomb. Naturally, every exceptional detective requires some assistance from the police force, and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson fulfills that role as Phryne’s confidante, friend, and potential romantic interest.
Essie Davis delivers a flawless portrayal of Phryne Fisher, infusing the character with sass, style, and intellect. While she may appear older than the Miss Fisher depicted in the original books on which the TV show is based, this adds a sense of credibility and gravitas to her persona. Nathan Page shines as the exasperated yet amused police inspector, working diligently to keep Miss Fisher at arm’s length from his cases. Like Phryne, his character embodies modern sensibilities for the time period, and their mutual respect greatly contributes to their prowess in solving crimes. It’s a refreshing change to have a police inspector who matches the intelligence of the leading private eye, providing valuable insights throughout the investigative process.
Noteworthy mention must be given to the show’s costumes, which play an instrumental role in character development Phryne effortlessly dons silk and chiffon gowns, along with flamboyant fur hats and coats that mirror her vivacious, stylish, and fun-loving nature. DI Robinson and Constable Collins sport respectable brown suits and hats befitting the working-class men. Dorothy, Phryne’s companion and lady-in-waiting, adorns herself in modest Catholic girl attire, featuring long skirts and oversized cardigans.
Although the show faced cancellation after Season 2, the fervor and dedication of its loyal fanbase led to its revival. Season 3 made a triumphant return in 2015, and followed by a special movie release in 2020.
