With the summer behind us, my four-year-old and I are craving some good old animation classics. With the “Gorl’ meme gone viral earlier year this seemed like a good reason as any to revisit the very first and original Despicable Me.
My review in four words: Brilliantly non-stop funny ?
In this story, the world’s greatest villain Gru (perfectly voiced by Steve Carrell) has recently been upstaged by a pyramid stealing newbie. Clearly, he must establish his supremacy and he hatches a brilliant plan, which is to – wait for it- steal the moon!
But moon-jacking equipment can be expensive and even a super-villain has debt issues. The underworld bank (Lehman Brother but of course!) will only loan him the money if he can procure a key weapon. To do that he must adopt 3 cookie-selling orphan girls. Why, what, how can be answered when you watch the movie.
It is hilarious to watch this evil but soft-spoken villain, become a reluctant parent to such adorable girls. The breakout stars of the show are obviously the yellow pod like factory workers – the minions.
The movie is lovely combination of in-your-face slapstick humor as witty underhanded remarks.
Despicable Me continues to be refreshing even today despite the animation overload we will all seem to be sifting through. With advancements in animation technology, movies seem like experimenting grounds for what visual wonders can be created rather than an entertaining and meaningful experience. Sometimes I get the feeling that movies are becoming gimmickier and contain less of story-telling. But Despicable Me stays strong on content and humor.
Verdict
I highly recommend it!
(Seriously, its 2018, if you still haven’t seen this movie you need to get out from under that rock and catch it on Netflix or Prime or whatever streaming service you are on!)

Well written reviews…I agree, these both were good movies. I think Megamind was definitely a take on SuperMan with a twist. Perhaps just a coincidence, but both these had villians who became heroes in the end.
Oh I loved Megamind for its unique story where the villain gets the attention for change. So tired of seeing your typical heroes and what they should be 🙂 I totally enjoyed Megamind whereas Despicable Me was…different but didn’t give me that wow factor that Megamind did. Good to know that you and Kapil enjoyed these movies. I recommend Disney’s Tangled. Its entertaining with a twist as well.
My reaction to the movies was exactly opposite. And I really did not like Tangled – a little cliched dont u think?
